CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) – An Appalachian classic fruit is finally ripe for the picking, and some say it’s even better in frozen form!

Ellen’s Homemade Ice Cream in downtown Charleston is taking paw paws and turning them into a cool and creamy sweet treat! They say the texture and flavor make the fruit perfect for ice cream.

The paw paw ice cream is available in pints and quarts for grab-and-go at Ellens, or you can get it in a cup or cone.

“People start calling us weeks, sometimes a month in advance to make sure we get it. We enjoy it a great deal because, obviously, we produce everything here in-house. Everything’s local, and local is always best,” said Aaron Clark, co-owner of Ellen’s Homemade Ice Cream.

You can’t usually find paw paws in a grocery store, which makes the sweet treat even sweeter to savor for the season.
