LAWRENCE COUNTY, OH (WOWK) — A deputy with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) was shot in the leg while responding to a domestic violence complaint in Proctorville Saturday night.

According to a release from the LCSO, the call came in around 10:16 p.m. Officers responded to a residence on Township Road where they were told by a female on the scene that the suspect, Charles Eugene Martin, II, was intoxicated and brandishing a firearm.

When confronted, the suspect reportedly fired a shot into the leg of a deputy, and the deputy shot back and struck the suspect.

After retreating and surrounding the residence for about two hours, law enforcement reentered the residence and detained the suspect. Martin was transported to a local hospital to treat multiple gunshot wounds and is in police custody. The injured deputy is also being treated.

Martin is currently charged with Felonious Assault and Attempted Murder. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is investigating the incident.

Members of the Lawrence County Drug and Major Crime Task Force, Ironton Police Department, Ohio State Highway Patrol, South Point Police Department, Chesapeake Police Department, Coal Grove Police Department, Lawrence County EMS and Rome Township Fire Department assisted.
