KANAWHA COUNTY, WV (WOWK) – As many West Virginians rally around those devastated by Hurricane Helene in the hardest-hit areas, one Kanawha County organization is paying it forward with some help from a four-legged friend with connections to western North Carolina.

Campbells Creek Cares is working to collect donations for western North Carolina, and they’re getting a helping hoof from Muffin McFinnie, the mini pony. Muffin’s owner says western North Carolina is where she picked the pony up from.

The goal of the donation drive is to fill a horse trailer with supplies for the hurricane victims. Friday’s drive just wrapped up, but they’ll be back at it on Saturday between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Fas-Check.

“Muffin, behind me, actually has a special connection. She came from Six Mile, North Carolina, which, if you look at a map, is pretty close to where the devastation is. So, we’re kind of using her as a fundraiser for the kids to come out and pet the pony, mom and dad can purchase supplies and donate. We are working together to help each other,” said Debra Romeo of Campbells Creek Cares.

Supplies and donations collected are headed to Statesville, North Carolina on Monday.

Campbells Creek Cares was organized in 2022 after massive flooding hit the tight-knit community. The charity has remained a source for addressing emergency needs ever since.
