CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) – The West Virginia House of Delegates has voted to approve a child and dependent care tax credit for West Virginians.

The bill, HB 226 , now moves to the State Senate, which convened at 1 p.m. Monday, for a vote. The childcare tax credit is one of the hot topic items brought before the special session of the West Virginia Legislature. House Speaker Roger Hanshaw (R-Clay) and Minority Leader Sean Hornbuckle (D-Cabell) introduced the bill on Sept. 30 before the special session went into recess .

The bill would amend WV State Code to provide for a “child and dependent care credit against the personal income tax in the amount of 50 percent of the allowed federal tax credit…” This means anyone allowed a federal tax credit for child and dependent care under the US Code would also get a nonrefundable credit under West Virginia Code.

If passed, HB 226 would take retrospective effect for the current calendar year that began on Jan. 1, 2024.
