WAYNE COUNTY, WV (WOWK) – Two West Virginia towns have made Good Housekeeping’s list of the best towns for celebrating Halloween.

Good Housekeeping released its 2024 list of “ 19 Best Halloween Towns that Go All Out for the Spooky Holiday ,” featuring cities and small towns that know how to have a spooktacularly fun Halloween. Some are known for classic movies shot in the town, and others for their history of ghost stories and sightings. But some, like the two in West Virginia, made the list for their ability to bring the community out for some Halloween and fall festivities!

The two towns from the Mountain State actually made the list together. Ceredo and Kenova in Wayne County were ranked fourth on the list – coming in ahead of some spooky spots such as Salem, Massachusetts, and Savannah, Georgia.

According to Good Housekeeping, Ceredo and Kenova earned their shared ranking by coming together to put on the annual C-K AutumnFest celebration and the world-famous Kenova Pumpkin House.

For 2024, the AutumnFest will kick off Saturday, Oct. 19, and run through Halloween. The event includes a parade, an arts and crafts show, a tractor show, concerts, a home decorating contest and more! The annual AutumnFest Pagent to crown the 2024 royalty took place on Oct. 6.

Along with AutumnFest, the Pumpkin House will also open from Oct. 25 through Oct. 31. The Pumpkin House got its start more than 45 years ago by Kenova resident Ric Griffith, who began decorating his house with numerous carved pumpkins, and the spooky spectacle continues to grow each year. As the more than 3,000 pumpkins are hand-carved, volunteers are welcome to start joining the carving fun on Saturday, Oct. 19. You can learn more about the Pumpkin House or how to volunteer on its Facebook page or website.

The town that made the top of the list is St. Helens, Oregon. The town is known for being the filming location of Disney’s “ Halloweentown ,” starring Kimberly J. Brown and the late Debbie Reynolds. Since the movie released in 1998, the town has put on Halloween activities throughout the month of October.
