UPDATE: (11:42 p.m. Thursday, October 10) — Fire Marshals isolated the cause of an explosion that happened in downtown Charleston Thursday afternoon.

According to investigators the back-up generator on top of the AT&T building was over pressurized in the generator exhaust.

The final determination will be made by specialist familiar with that generator, Captain David Hodges with the Charleston Fire Department said.

The incident happened in a mechanical room on top of the building at the corner of Lee and Capitol Streets Tuesday afternoon.

The AT&T building houses telecommunications equipment. 13 News reached out to AT&T for comment. We’ve not heard back yet.

The explosion sent shrapnel flying into the air.

No one was injured and no communications were disrupted, Hodges said.
