JACKSON COUNTY, WV (WOWK) – Jackson County is about to get a lot greener.

Fairplain Elementary School joined a national recycling competition in an effort to win enough money to replace their playground equipment, and also teach their students about the environment.

“The new generations, the young kids that’s great. It helps build upon everybody recycling and we’ve got to start somewhere and this is a great place to start,” says Jeff Brooks, with Constellieum.

The competition is the Two Million Cans Recycling Contest, which they are joining in partnership with Constellium.

The goal is for all the participating schools to collect two million cans total, and Fairplain is the only school in West Virginia with the honor of participating.

Each school is awarded as it completes certain milestones, and in the end, the top three schools are awarded prize money.

“We’ll take any can from anybody and together this community can build an amazing playground for very deserving children,” Principal Tonia Carpenter said.

“The community doesn’t have a lot of places for families to go, play together or take the kids to play. So it will also be used for that because our school grounds are open for public use. It will have picnic tables, they can have picnics and all kinds of wonderful things,” she said.

Those interested in dropping off their cans can visit the school and drop them off at the RJ Recycling drop-off spot. The competition ends in April.
