CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) — Threats have shut down schools all across the Appalachian region in recent months, and whether they’re hoaxes or not, lawmakers and school administrators came together Wednesday to talk about them and how classrooms can be made safer.

The two-day school safety conference kicked off in the morning, making note of the many recent threats in the area and how technology plays an integral part in children’s lives.

A big message of the event was that threats would not be tolerated and a positive environment is crucial for learning.

“We need to harden our schools and protect our kids and give our kids hope and know that they’re going to get the kind of support they need within the community. That’s going to be very guarded. We have to make sure that the mental health of our kids is strong and that we’re doing the right work and investment in making sure our communities keep coming together and that families and localities tackle problems,” Attorney General Patrick Morrisey said.

The brainstorming session continues on Thursday at the Charleston Marriott, starting at 8 a.m.
