CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) – One man is hoping to raise awareness for a great cause by walking from Charleston to Morgantown!

Robb Reel, with WKWS 96.1 radio in Charleston, took off from Virginia Street in Charleston Thursday morning. He’ll walk all the way to WVU Medicine Children’s Hospital using Route 119. His goal is to raise awareness and money for the hospital.

“I ran my big mouth is the short answer. We were doing our annual Cares for Kids Radiothon from the Hostetler Center at the WVU Medicine Children’s in Morgantown, and I wasn’t thrilled with the Day 1 numbers,” Reel said. “And maybe it was because I was a little cold, hadn’t had enough caffeine, but I said ‘if you came through for West Virginia kids and beat last year’s total that I would walk the check from our Charleston studios back to Morgantown.”

The radiothan brought in more donations than in 2023. Whether it was his challenge that did the trick or not, Reel is now heading to Morgantown on foot to personally deliver the giant $172,000 check to WVU Medicine Children’s Hospital.

“They did it. West Virginians, I’m not surprised, but boy am I humbled, at the way folks came through and smashed last year’s totals. So, I respect folks enough that I’m going to keep my word. I owe it to folks who made the contributions to keep kids happy and healthy,” Reel said.

Reel says he hopes to get to Morgantown by Halloween. He’s updating his journey on the 96.1 KWS Facebook page with “#Walktober.”
