WESTMORELAND, WV (WOWK) — The start of school is right around the corner and parents are making sure their kids are ready for day one.

The Greater Huntington Parks and Recreation District helped families with the financial burden that goes along with back-to-school shopping, while also offering a fun event for kids.

When is Kanawha County trick or treat?

“We had some extra supplies that were generously donated and we wanted to have some fun with it, so we’re having a carnival of sorts,” GHPRD Recreation Superintendent Lauren Patrick says.

Families came out to Westmoreland Park Thursday evening to enjoy several activities and received a backpack full of school supplies.

“People will just come by and be like. Oh, it’s a back-to-school bash and they play fun games and win prizes and get these fun little erasers. It’s just amazing,” Haylynn Suttles says.

Haylynn and her dad joined several families for the annual supply drive. She says she believes this is a fun way to help families who might need a little extra help before the start of the school year.

“I just feel like this is really great for people who don’t have enough money to get school supplies. So they can just have a fun activity and they get the supplies for free,” Suttle says.

Park officials say helping families is the end goal while also giving kids a fun end to summer break.
