MYSTIC, Conn. (WPRI) — Mystic Aquarium welcomed a new harbor seal pup into the world on Mother’s Day.

The male pup was born on May 12 to Pearl, a harbor seal who has called the aquarium home for nearly 12 years.

“We couldn’t be more excited. He’s healthy, he’s strong and he’s feisty,” said Laurie Macha, senior director of marine mammals and birds.

Pearl, who’s been deemed a successful breeder through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Species Survival Plan, gave birth to the pup within 15 minutes, according to the aquarium. The pup, who weighs 12 kilograms, was alert and active immediately, which the aquarium said is “an encouraging sign of health and vitality.”

Pearl and her pup have both been doing well, according to the aquarium.

“The pup has been thriving with his mom, so giving them both access to water has been very exciting,” added Jen Rock, assistant supervisor of pinnipeds. “The team enjoyed watching the pup enter the water and see his instincts kick in by swimming right away. Pearl was great watching over him closely and teaching him how to dive and ensure he hauled out onto the beach when needed.”

The pup, who the aquarium said is Pearl’s second, has not yet been named.
