WESTERLY, R.I. (WPRI) — A 23-year-old Connecticut man has been sentenced to prison after iPhone photos revealed he was in possession of a car stolen from Westerly, U.S. Attorney Vanessa Avery announced on Tuesday.

Edwin Cordero, formerly of Stratford and Bridgeport, was sentenced on Monday to approximately 11 months in prison — time he has already served — with three years of supervised release for possessing a stolen vehicle and violating his supervised release from a prior stolen vehicle conviction.

Cordero pleaded guilty in May to possession of an Infiniti sedan that had been reported as stolen from a home in Westerly on Aug. 8, 2023.

The victim told police an iPhone left in the car was still backing up photos and videos to iCloud after the theft. According to prosecutors, images taken after the vehicle was reported missing showed Cordero with a gun on his lap and a person posing on the hood of another stolen vehicle next to his house. Other photos contained vapes, cigarettes, alcohol bottles, and marijuana.

On Aug. 14, Cordero was arrested after crashing the stolen sedan into multiple cars on a street in Bridgeport. He has been in federal detention since Aug. 29, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Cordero previously spent about 11 months in federal prison after he was arrested in 2022 for his involvement in an auto theft ring.

During Monday’s sentencing, Cordero was ordered to pay $21,336.59 in restitution, in addition to the $75,198 he still owes from his 2022 federal case.
