PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — An investigation is underway into the cause of a fire that broke out in a multifamily home Wednesday morning.

Providence firefighters were called to the home on East George Street around 9:49 a.m.

Deputy Assistant Fire Chief Craig Grantham said crews pulled up and saw flames coming from a third-floor window and smoke extending into the attic.

Five families, including seven adults and one child, who lived there safely made it out of the home and are being assisted by the American Red Cross.

One firefighter sustained minor injuries and went to the hospital to get checked out as a precaution, according to Grantham.

Rhode Island Energy also responded to the scene to gauge the meters. Grantham said the tenants will be displaced until their landlord and an electrician evaluate the structural integrity of the home.

“At this point, all residents will be displaced because the meters were pulled so there is no power to the building,” Grantham said.

Grantham said the fire appears to have started around a windowsill in a bedroom. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
