PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Thousands of students in Providence will start school on Tuesday and they can expect to see some changes.

Providence Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Javier Montañez said progress is being made in the five “redesign schools” — four high schools and one middle school.

Through this process, the district is creating new school options that meet student and family interests. It’s all part of the district’s goal to have 50% of area schools be new or like-new for students.

“This is going to be the first year that they’re actually going in fully. And we’re looking at that work, because it’s giving our students the opportunity for new pathways, what interested them, and we’re giving them that information,” Montañez said. “We’re giving them the schools that they need to so they can move forward and be successful.”

He adds the district is also looking to enhance its career and technical education programs. They currently have more than 20 offered to students.
