NARRAGANSETT, R.I. (WPRI) — Two University of Rhode Island students were arrested for allegedly assaulting two Narragansett police officers while they were breaking up a house party.

The incident occurred Friday night in the Bonnet Shores neighborhood, according to police.

Cody Calkins, 21, and Jake Dignam, 20, are both charged with simple assault, obstructing an officer in the line of duty, resisting arrest, and disorderly conduct.

Court records show Calkins is also charged with felony larceny.

Both were released on personal recognizance and will be arraigned on Sept. 17.

Since Labor Day, police said 22 URI students have been arrested on various charges, including DUI, public urination and littering.

In response, the university issued the following statement to Narragansett police:

“The University is aware of several incidents that occurred in Narragansett over the past weekend and does not condone the reported behavior. Any involvement by URI students will be reviewed consistent with the University’s Community Standards and Student Conduct System and may result in sanctions, including suspension or dismissal, in addition to any local actions taken. The University appreciates the efforts of local law enforcement and is working closely with the Narragansett police department to uphold and promote the well-being of our community.”

Additionally, police said the renters and owners of three separate residences will receive Municipal Court summonses for violating the newly amended Public Nuisance Ordinance . Homeowners, renters, and their guests could face fines of up to $500 for a first offense.

“The Narragansett Police Department will continue to arrest and prosecute offenders in the student-renter community who choose to violate town statutes and ordinances,” Chief Sean Corrigan said. “Students are reminded of the potentially life-altering consequences of bad choices, and are urged to show respect for each other, the police and the community at-large.”
