WEST WARWICK R.I. (WPRI) — A domestic assault led to a standoff Monday morning in West Warwick, according to police.

Officers responded to Morris Street just before 7:30 a.m. after a woman called saying she was assaulted and ran to a neighbor’s home with her child.

Upon arrival, police say the man was believed to be barricaded inside and was possibly armed.

SWAT officers attempted to get in contact with the suspect but were unsuccessful. They later entered the home and found the man had died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The victim was transported to the hospital with injuries, police said, but the child was not injured.
