NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — The New Bedford area and part of Cape Cod are now considered high risk for West Nile virus after more human cases were reported on Tuesday.

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) said three people in their 60s have tested positive for the virus, bringing the total to 10 cases so far this year. One of the new cases was in southern Bristol County, while the others were in Barnstable and Suffolk counties.

More than 300 mosquito samples collected statewide have tested positive for West Nile virus so far this year, according to health officials.

New Bedford is now considered high risk, along with Dartmouth, Acushnet, Yarmouth, Barnstable, Mashpee and Sandwich.

Dr. Robbie Goldstein, the state’s public health commissioner, encouraged people to continue taking steps to protect themselves against mosquito bites.

“West Nile virus does not always raise as much concern as EEE, but it remains a potentially very serious disease, especially for those over the age of 60 or with certain medical conditions, such as cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, kidney disease, or an organ transplant,” Goldstein explained.

Health officials recommend taking the following steps to protect yourself and your family:

    • Limit time outside during peak hours (from dusk to dawn)
    • Use bug spray when outdoors
    • Wear protective clothing, including long sleeves, pants and socks
    • Mosquito-proof your home
      • Drain standing water around your house and yard
      • Install or repair screens in all windows
