PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Rhode Island’s top education official is one step closer to getting her contract extended.

At a meeting of the State Council on Elementary and Secondary Education on Wednesday night, the panel voted unanimously to reappoint R.I. Education Commissioner Angélica Infante-Green for three more years. Her current contract expires next April.

The panel also authorized the council’s chair to negotiate and finalize the execution of Infante-Green’s new employment agreement, which is still subject to the advice and consent of the full R.I. Board of Education.

The board’s next meeting date has not been set yet.

“Commissioner Infante-Green is committed and eager to continue her work to create more opportunities and pathways for high-quality learning for all students and ensure Rhode Island’s state education system continues to move forward,” RIDE spokesperson Victor Morente said in a statement following the vote.

According to state payroll records, Infante-Green earned $296,174 during the 2023-2024 fiscal year. No details of her proposed contract have been released.

Infante-Green has stated publicly she intends to stay in Rhode Island.

“I love Rhode Island. This is where my work is, and we’ve been doing really good work,” Infante-Green said in a Sept. 6 taping of Newsmakers .
