NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — Crews in New Bedford were called to put out a mill fire late Friday night.

Around 11:30 p.m., firefighters were called to the intersection of Hope St. and Belleville Rd. for a report of a fire.

When crews arrived, they found heavy fire spreading up the outside wall of the four-story mill building.

A second alarm response was requested at first, but a general alarm was called in a few minutes later.

At one point, crews were called out of the building due to the intensity of the flames.

New Bedford Fire Chief Scott Kruger said the sprinkler system in the building helped keep the fire under control.

“Fortunately, the building has a working sprinkler system which greatly helped our efforts to control the fire,” Kruger said.

“Obviously, sprinkler systems work great because they are already assigned to fight the fire before we even arrive on scene,” he added. “They kind of keep the fire manageable.”

No one was injured and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
