SCITUATE, R.I. (WPRI) — A Scituate home was heavily damaged in a fire Wednesday afternoon, and 12 News has learned the family who lives there was already fighting a battle.

Firefighters from several area departments responded to Silk Lane to help put out the flames.

The bomb squad was also called in after ammunition and inert grenades were found at the scene, according to the fire chief.

A 22-year-old who lives at the home told 12 News her father is a Cranston firefighter who’s on leave from his job to take care of her mother, who has ALS, otherwise known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Prior to the fire, a GoFundMe page had already raised more than $20,000 to help Rae-Anne Laprade and her family.

Fire officials on scene said Laprade was taken to the hospital for evaluation.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
