JAMESTOWN, R.I. (WPRI) — A Jamestown bait & tackle shop closed its doors for good Monday, 12 News has learned.

Zeek’s Creek Bait & Tackle announced back in September that it would officially shutter on Oct. 14 as the state prepares to take over the property.

“Though I am embracing the thought of retirement, I am very sad at the thought of closing Zeek’s Creek!” the owner wrote in a social media post . “I want to thank everyone who helped me live my dream! It sure has been an incredible 40 years!”

In a statement, the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) explained that it proactively reached out to the owner to acquire the property upon learning that it was up for sale.

Charles St. Martin, a spokesperson for RIDOT, told 12 News that it will be raising the elevation of North Road where it passes over the marsh and near the tackle shop “to provide resiliency to future sea level rise.”

The tackle shop, which first opened its doors 40 years ago, was known for selling fresh seafood alongside the standard bait and tackle supplies.

Zeek’s Creek was also known for its “wall of fame,” which was covered in Polaroids of anglers with their prized catches from over the years.
