UNCASVILLE, CT. (WPRI) — It’s been six years since Dan Hurley left URI to take the head coaching position at UConn, and on Monday night, he coached the Huskies to a 102-75 win against the program that he built from 2012-2018.

The exhibition game raised money for cancer, and a nearly sold out Mohegan Sun Arena came to support the cause, while watching Hurley take on his former team.

Postgame, Hurley gushed about Rhode Island.

“I love Rhode Island,” said Hurley as he came to the podium. “People have no idea how great a place Rhode Island is to live, and how awesome URI is, and what it’s like. You know, when you you have, when you build a great team, and what the Ryan Center turns into and Thor and the university and the state that changed my life.”

URI’s Head Coach, Archie Miller, was happy to take part in an event like this, while playing a team like UConn.

Fortunate and thankful to be a part of the game,” said Miller. “Obviously thanking the Hall of Fame for putting this on for a great cause. Hopefully tonight’s environment spoke to that I thought, It was a great event. UConn, obviously, being a part of this as well with Danny and green to play us. I thought was a really cool opportunity to do.”

The Rams open their season against Fairfield at the Ryan Center on Nov. 4, while the Huskies open their season at home against Sacred Heart.
