PROVIDENCE, RI (WPRI) — This week’s Cardi’s Furniture & Mattresses Hometown Sports Heroes are Moira Haxton and Alessandra Roye.

The 10th seed in the State Doubles Tennis Tournament, Haxton and Roye pair knocked off the top seed from Barrington to bring a 3 rd straight Doubles Championship back to LaSalle.

“No, it’s still crazy to think that I’m a Doubles Champion,” Roye said. “That’s insane. I never thought this would happen.”

“I think kind of being the underdog, put more pressure on them in a way,” Haxton said. “So we just kind of went in there stress free and obviously there was nerves but I mean all we can do is play our game.”

The chemistry the pair built during the season, coming together at the perfect time.

“All season long they have continued to get stronger and continued to get better,” said Rams Head Coach Tom Martin. “Alessandra, I think, and I’ve told many people this, probably has the best footwork of any young lady whom I’ve had the pleasure to coach in my entire career. And Moira just stays emotionally constant, not too high not too low and that works well for the both of them. And obviously it’s been proven with the results of this week’s tournament.”

With their Title in hand, Moira and Alessandra are now turning their focus to their biggest goal, helping LaSalle bring home their 11th straight D-I Championship. But making that happen would require another upset of the Eagles. Undefeated Barrington beat the Rams in both of their regular season matches.

“I think going into it, everyone just has to want it,” Haxton said. “Like I know we all do. So like putting that into our game and each match counts, so like no matter where you are in the lineup, you matter.”

“Obviously Barrington is a great team, but ours is too,” Roye said. “And I know if we put our heads down, we can do it. It’s all the mindset. It’s more the mindset when it comes to Tennis. It’s not so much skill, so if we play as well as we have been doing, I think we’ll be perfectly fine.”
