FALL RIVER, Mass. (WPRI) — Middle and high school students in Fall River will now have to lock up their phones during the school day.

The district began a cell phone ban for grades 6-12 on Tuesday.

According to a letter sent to families by the superintendent, Yondr pouches will be used at Kuss, Morton, Talbot, Doran and Henry Lord middle schools, as well as Durfee High School.

Stone Therapeutic Day School and the Robert L. Medeiros Resiliency Preparatory Academy already have a turn-in policy, according to the letter.

The policy was approved by Fall River’s School Committee on Aug. 12.

According to the policy, exceptions due to a disability-related need will be addressed “through the IEP and/or Section 504 process, as appropriate.”

Exceptions that aren’t disability-related can be requested by students and will be made by their principal “on a case-by-case basis.”
