    12 News hosting GOP primary debates for US Senate, Cranston mayor

    EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — In the coming weeks, Rhode Islanders will be voting in the state’s primary elections.

    Primary day is Tuesday, Sept. 10, but early voting gets underway next week, on Wednesday, Aug. 21.

    To help voters make informed decisions, 12 News will be hosting a series of debates throughout the rest of the year moderated by Target 12 Chief Investigative Reporter Tim White and 12 News Politics Editor Ted Nesi .

    The first two debates will feature candidates in the contested Republican primaries for U.S. Senate and Cranston mayor.

    On Friday, Aug. 16, Patricia Morgan and Ray McKay will go head-to-head in a Newsmakers debate, which will cover a wide range of topics important to voters.

    Morgan and McKay are looking to unseat incumbent U.S. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, who faces a Democratic primary challenge from Michael Costa.

    WHERE THEY STAND: Election 2024

    Then, on Friday. Aug. 30, Cranston Mayor Ken Hopkins will take on state Rep. Barbara Ann Fenton-Fung in a Newsmakers debate. The winner of their Republican primary for mayor will go up against Democratic City Councilor Robert Ferri in the general election in November.

    Both debates will air at 6:30 p.m. on FOX Providence and can also be watched right here on WPRI.com.
