SMITHFIELD, R.I. (WPRI) — There are blue-green algae blooms in Waterman and Slacks reservoirs in Smithfield and Boone Lake in Exeter.

The Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH) and the Department of Environmental Management (DEM) are advising people to stay away from the water bodies.

Blue-green algae can produce toxins that can be harmful to both animals and humans.

People should avoid swimming, boating, fishing or kayaking in the ponds. Officials say people should also avoid ingesting water or fish from the water bodies. Pets should not be allowed to drink or swim in the water either.

The advisory will remain in affect until further notice.

Health officials are lifting advisories restricting recreational activities at Carbuncle Pond in Coventry and Mishnock Lake in West Greenwhich. Those advisories were also due to high levels of blue-green algae.
