The Rawson House moves to Broadway

COLUMBUS,Ga. (WRBL) — The Rawson House moved from Lumpkin, Georgia, to Broadway.

The house was built in 1845 for Edward Rawson who moved from Connecticut to Lumpkin in the early 1840’s. The house was originally a white clapboard with green shutters where oak, hickory and crepe myrtle trees were planted by Edward’s brother William. The brothers lived a block away from each other and started two stores, a clothing store and a general store.

On Feb. 8, the house took the 35-mile journey from its original plot in Lumpkin to its new home in the Historic District of downtown Columbus. This is the first of the five houses moving into the district.

With help from the Blackstock House Movers, the house safely made it to its new home after the three-hour journey from Lumpkin.

Justin Krieg, the Director of Planning and Programs with the Historic Columbus Foundation told WRBL, “It’s a good way to showcase what Historic Columbus is all about in terms of bringing vibrancy to an area that may not have been living up to its full potential with the fountain, so moving the five houses in will go a long way towards bringing new families and owners to the neighborhood.”
