PINE MOUNTAIN, Ga. ( WRBL ) — After a public announcement of a multimillion-dollar improvement project in January this year, work is well underway at Callaway Resort and Gardens.

Callaway representatives said they plan for phase one of the improvements to be finished by Friday, May 24. They said the construction won’t take away from the usual fun of Memorial Day weekend activities.

“It won’t be a disruption for our guests,” said Rachael McConnell, marketing manager at Callaway Gardens.

She added regular daily programming will continue as the park officially opens for its summer season.

McConnell continued, “All of our beloved events will still take place as normal, we’re just going to have some construction on the side.”

Phase one of the project focused mainly on the Central Activities Hub at Callaway, which will now be called the Robin Lake Plaza.

It also included the creation of a new snack bar inside the Callaway Lodge and Spa. The new Azalea Market features a variety of grab-and-go food items, snacks, gelato and Starbucks coffee.

Over the summer, Callaway hopes to add a new covered dining pavilion, additional restrooms and a new playground at Robin Lake Beach.

The improvement project comes as part of a plan set in motion by Herschend Enterprises in 2022. Herschend officially became Callaway’s parent company last year.

Callaway has been working with Herschend since 2020, when they brought the company in to help with the annual “Fantasy in Lights” event. Herschend is known for its work with Dollywood and the Harlem Globetrotters.

“It’s all about bringing families together here,” said Callaway Gardens Vice President Chris Lutz in January. “We want to make sure folks are truly having a great time.”

On May 24, Callaway officially opens for its Memorial Day weekend activities and the 64th Annual Masters Waterski and Wakeboard tournament, which will run through May 26.
