COLUMBUS, Ga. ( WRBL ) — Retired Columbus orthopedic surgeon Dr. Carl Savory had a distinguished 24-year military career long before he picked up a scalpel and practiced medicine in Columbus.

A 1967 U.S. Military Academy at West Point graduate, Savory served in Vietnam. He was also part of the Special Forces team that attempted the aborted and deadly 1980 rescue attempt of U.S. hostages in Iran.

After he retired he practiced with the Hughston Clinic. Early in that career he was recalled for four months during the Gulf War. While a civilian, Savory was part of an effort to normalize relations with Vietnam.

He talks about that and more in a Memorial Day edition of the Sunday Conversation. But Savory does not talk about his service in terms of self, he talks about while remembering the service and sacrifice of others.
