(WRBL) — Parts of the nation may fall silent on Monday afternoon.

The “National Moment of Remembrance Act” asks Americans to annually take a moment of silence each Memorial Day at 3 p.m. local time. The act was signed into law back in 2000.

A few years prior, children touring Washington D.C. were asked about the meaning of Memorial Day. Their response was “that’s the day the pools open,” according to the Army .

That response inspired congress to create the Remembrance Act as an effort to remind citizens of the true meaning behind Memorial Day.

In the Chattahoochee Valley, a myriad of commemorative events are planned to honor our fallen on Monday. We’ll be posting the full details online throughout the day.
