COLUMBUS, Ga. ( WRBL ) — Annually, Memorial Day honors those who lost their lives protecting their country. Descendants of those who served in the American Revolution gathered at Parkhill Cemetery May 27 to remember the sacrifice of their ancestors, family, friends and many others.

The Sons- and Daughters of the American Revolution have gathered at the cemetery every Memorial Day for the last 19 years for a wreath laying ceremony.

“I learned early on the importance of Memorial Day and honoring those who have passed before us, especially those in uniform. It means a great deal to me,” said Marilyn Wallace of the Kings Gap DAR chapter.

Wallace has been coming to the wreath laying ceremony for at least the past 15 years. This year, she also honored the fallen during the ceremony as part of the Kings Gap Darlings choir.

Another DAR member, Marsha Newer of the Ogelthorpe chapter, spent the ceremony thinking about her family.

“My son-in-law lost a lot of friends Afghanistan and I think about him because he went up to Arlington last summer and made his peace,” Newer said.

Newer was a participant in the wreath laying ceremony, a SAR/DAR tradition which honors those who have lost their lives in service to the country.

“I am very thankful and very grateful, my husband is retired military, my son is still in the service,” said Newer. “I’m blessed to a part of this country and the sacrifices that people have made for us.”

In recognition of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for this country, ceremony attendees were silent as a canon fired and the somber bugle notes of “Taps” filled the air.
