COLUMBUS, Ga. ( WRBL ) — Veterans gathered at the Robert S. Poydasheff VA Clinic for an event focused on toxic substance exposure. The Central Alabama Veterans Health Care System (CAVHCS) hosted its “PACT Act Vet Fest” from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Aug. 23.

The PACT Act, or Promise to Address Comprehensive Toxics Act, was established in 2022. It expanded VA care to vets impacted by exposure to Agent Orange, burn pits and other toxic substances, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

“I get to take care of these patients who now qualify for all of this,” said Dr. Andrew C. Anderson, who was at the clinic. “That’s very meaningful to me as a doctor to be able to comprehensively address all the conditions that a patient is experiencing.”

Anderson is CAVHCS’ deputy associate chief of staff for ambulatory care and said many of his patients show symptoms he believes are consistent with toxic substance exposure.

According to the VA, after the creation of the PACT Act, of over 5 million veterans screened nationally, nearly half reported at least one instance of possible toxic substance exposure during their service.

At the PACT Act Vet Fest, local vets were able to receive toxicology screenings, VA benefits claims assistance and access to other healthcare services. There were also holistic health resources available, such as nutrition information and a tai chi workshop.

Veterans interested in seeking care may visit their local VA for additional assistance.
