OPELIKA, Ala. (WRBL) -On the 13th day of the Southeast strike against AT&T, East Alabama workers gathered on the picket lines in Opelika, standing firm in their protest. The strike, which involves 17,000 workers across the Southeast, is focused on claims AT&T is not negotiating in good faith.

Some drivers passing by the picket lines honked their horns in support of the strikers, who have become a visible part of the local landscape. The workers appreciate the attention their cause is getting and asked WRBL to get a statement from their union, the Communication Workers of America (CWA).

“We’re more than happy to go back to work and serve our customers like we do every other day of the year,” a CWA spokesperson said, “but until AT&T starts acting right, we’ll be here on the picket line.”

The strike has caused issues in the region, including a 911 outage in Troup County on Tuesday. There was also a nationwide AT&T outage reported on Downdetector.com, though AT&T says the issue was resolved by Wednesday.

AT&T Southeast denies the union’s claims, saying they are offering fair terms, including wages that outpace inflation, wellness incentives, and other benefits. Negotiations are continuing with the help of a federal mediator.

Meanwhile, workers in East Alabama and across the Southeast remain on the picket lines, determined to keep striking until an agreement is reached.
