AUBURN, Ala. (WRBL) — A tragic discovery was made late Thursday night when Dr. William C. Neely, 92, and his wife, Mrs. Betty T. Neely, 88, were found dead in their Auburn home, each with a single gunshot wound.

Auburn Police officers responded to the residence on Payne Street at approximately 11:30 p.m. on September 5, 2024, following a request for a welfare check. Upon entering the home, authorities located the couple and recovered a handgun at the scene.

Investigators confirmed there were no signs of forced entry, and no indication that anyone else was present during the incident. The Neelys were longtime residents of the home, and while the investigation is ongoing, police have assured the public that there is no immediate threat.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the Auburn Police Department at (334) 501-3140, text the tip line at (334) 246-1391, or email police@auburnalabama.org.

If they don't know who did it then how can they say there's no threat to the public?
