    Fortson doctor killed in head-on Interstate 85 crash in Opelika

    OPELIKA, Ala. (WRBL) – A head-on collision on Interstate 85 claimed the life of a Fortson, Georgia physician on Saturday, September 7. Two other individuals involved in the collision were transported by ambulance to the hospital, but their conditions remain unknown at this time.

    Opelika Police responded to a call at approximately 7:17 p.m. regarding a multi-vehicle crash near Exit 62 northbound. Upon arriving at the scene, officers found two vehicles involved in a head-on collision. One vehicle had caught fire, but officers were able to temporarily extinguish the flames to assist the occupants until Opelika Fire arrived.

    Dr. Goodchild, 50, was transported via Life Flight to Piedmont Columbus Regional Hospital in Columbus, GA, where the coroner tells WRBL he was pronounced dead at 8:49 p.m. from injuries sustained from the crash.

    The Opelika Police Department’s Traffic Homicide Investigation Unit is investigating the incident. Authorities are urging anyone with information about the crash to contact the Opelika Police Department at (334) 705-5200 or the Secret Witness Hotline at (334) 745-8665. Tips can also be submitted through the Opelika Police Mobile App. Callers can remain anonymous.
