MONTGOMERY, Ala. ( WIAT ) At a visit to Halcyon Elementary School in Montgomery, Governer Kay Ivey spoke with students about the importance of remembering September 11, 2001.

“America’s strength in the face of its darkest hours lies in the hands of us, her people,” Ivey said.

Ivey explained the history of the horrific events that claimed the lives of nearly 3,000 innocent Americans.

Ivey also emphasized the value of hard work.

“By being diligent in your coursework, you can honor the past, and ensure a brighter future for yourselves, and our country,” Ivey said.

343 firefighters who lost their lives on 9/11 were honored during a ceremony in Montgomery.

One attendee, Angel Barbosa, served as a first responder at both towers on 9/11.

“I… did the best I could to save lives,” said Barbosa.

He said he and others still fight illnesses after responding that day in New York.

“It was a horrible day for us… we are still today. We lost so many brothers and sisters, and we are still today,” said Barbosa.

Montgomery Fire Chief Miford Jordan remembers where he was on 9/11.

“And when we saw the second plane, we realized what had happened,” said Jordan. “And that day, it changed a lot in our nation, and definitely in the fire service altogether.”

Governor Ivey said 9/11 is a solemn reminder of the profound debt of gratitude owed to all who sacrificed their lives for us. She said it also showcases the powerful, rebounding spirit of our nation.
