Columbus, Ga – On Friday, September 20th the Brookstone Cougars hosted the Stratford Eagles and their 5-0 regular season record. It was a heated battle in the fourth quarter, and Brookstone trailed by 11 points with just under nine minutes to go in the game. Then kicker Jimmy Hunter hit a clutch field goal to tie the game at 27-27. The game was sent to overtime, and the Cougars didn’t waiver.

“It felt good knowing that we were resilient and able to get through an overtime game. Throughout our four years we have a lot of senior experience. So we’ve been able to see overtime a lot. So we knew that we were able to get through it,” said senior offensive guard and linebacker Jaxon James.

“We’ve been through overtime a lot throughout our seasons. We knew that we were the better team. We were very prepared,” said senior wide receiver and safety Maxwell Jones.

When a game extends into overtime a team’s will and health will be tested. Brookstone’s starting running back and one of their back up running backs had to leave the game due to injuries. That’s when junior MJ Archibald stepped up, and ran in the game winning touchdown.

“It was great and it was fun. It was hard though because I don’t get to play running back a lot. We had a few injuries and I had to get in there. But our line you know did a good job and I jumped in there,” said Archibald.

That overtime victory puts the Brookstone overall record this season at 3-2. Head Coach Rance Gillespie is proud and happy with the development of this team throughout the season.

“I’m really proud of the performance that we’ve had consistently special teams wise. We’ve played defensively minus a drive here or there. We’ve played pretty well and we’ve grown throughout the year offensively. Hopefully we’ll be peaking at the right team heading into the region,” said Gillespie.

Congratulations to our newest Kia AutoSport Athletes of the Week the Brookstone Cougars football team.
