    The Tuskegee Morehouse Classic’s $800,000 economic impact

    COLUMBUS, Ga. ( WRBL ) — The 85th annual Tuskegee Morehouse Classic brought crowds from all over to the Chattahoochee Valley. Here’s how those crowd benefited the local economy.

    Peter Bowden, the President and CEO of Visit Columbus says sports tourism is a big business in Columbus.

    “The fact that is returning back to Columbus and we’re looking at the economic impact of just under $800,000”

    Bowden says this is due in part by all the events organizers have developed around the classic. He says visitors will partake in other things in the city, not just the football game.

    “I think that’s one of the things that sort of sets Columbus apart in that regard. So, it’s an economic impact and there’s a multiplier effect that ripples through the community, not just for the immediate effect that the there’s a ball game here in Columbus.”

    Merri Sherman, the Executive Director of the Columbus Sports Council says showcasing Columbus through sports is beneficial to the economy.

    Sherman also shared the Tuskegee Morehouse Classic works to impact the economy in the future by helping to generate scholarships for student athletes.
