A New Jersey River Live train operator is dead and several passengers are injured after a train struck a tree on Monday morning.

The accident happened just after 6 a.m. on the New Jersey River Line Light Rail track near US 130 when a train struck a tree as it was traveling southbound from Trenton towards the Roebling Station.

Reports state, the train operator was killed and Burlington County police confirmed to PHL17 that 18 passengers out of the 45 passengers on board were injured and transported to the hospital.

“I have been briefed on an accident on the @NJTRANSIT_RL earlier today in which the light rail struck a tree on the tracks, leading to the death of the train operator and injuring passengers. An investigation is underway. Our prayers are with all affected by this tragic incident.” said NJ Governor Phil Murphy in a post on X.

Currently, the New Jersey Transit River Line is suspended in both directions.

There will be a bus service being provided in the meantime, as the investigation continues.

Police, fire trucks, and EMS vehicles are currently on the scene at RT-130 Southbound between Burlington Road and Kinkora Road. All lanes are currently closed.
