COLUMBUS, Ga. ( WRBL )— Tuesday afternoon, the suspect accused of shooting a Columbus man and fleeing to Texas appeared in Recorder’s Court.

Marcus Harris, 48, is accused of shooting and killing Derrick Jordan, 39, in May of this year. Detectives with the Columbus Police Department testify surveillance footage, recovered clothing, and text messages tie Harris to the murder. Testimony revealed Harris was linked to the victim through a significant other.

“Both the victim and the defendant are observed on camera at the intersection of 12th Street and Third Avenue, however, on opposite sides of 12th Street. Both go out of the frame of the camera. Several seconds later, the defendant is served running south on Third Avenue,” Detective Bobby Jackson with the Columbus Police Department said. “There were also multiple messages were Harris stated he was going to figure out who she was sleeping with and was going to shoot him and made reference to going to jail for the rest of his life.”

Clothes believed to be worn by Harris at the time of the murder were found discarded in the courtyard of the Springer Opera House. Surveillance footage captured Harris wearing those same clothes seen in the street footage.

Harris’ defense attorney, Michael Garner, entered a not guilty plea in on his behalf. Judge David Ranieri ordered he be held without bond; the case was bound over to the Superior Court.
