MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Authorities say a 40-year-old man in a stolen Hyundai struck a police cruiser and several other cars and caused a traffic nightmare during a pursuit Wednesday evening on Highway 385.

Travis Brown is charged with two counts of aggravated assault, theft of a motor vehicle, stolen firearm, evading arrest, reckless endangerment, resisting arrest, and many more charges related to drugs, guns, and various traffic violations.

According to a court affidavit, at 5 p.m. Wednesday, a state trooper spotted a Hyundai Sonata that matched the description of a stolen vehicle at a Love’s truck stop on Lamar Avenue. The tag number returned to a Honda Accord.

As more troopers arrived, the man behind the driver’s seat, who also had a female passenger in the car, allegedly put the car in reverse and struck a trooper’s vehicle, then attempted a getaway.

He headed south on Lamar, running a red light and striking three vehicles at intersections as troopers chased him, officers said.

When the driver got to Highway 385 at Ridgeway Road, officers say he struck another trooper’s vehicle, then bailed out and ran. He was taken into custody, but allegedly resisted officers’ commands to lie down.

Brown was taken to Baptist Hospital. The female passenger remained in the vehicle.

Officers said they found a loaded 9 mm Ruger handgun and a baggy filled with marijuana in the car. The gun and the Hyundai were stolen, officers said.

Court records show Brown was accused in the theft of a Hyundai from a hotel south of downtown on June 11.

On June 21, a police officer spotted Brown in the stolen vehicle in Parkway Village and ordered him to stop, but Brown ran away.

As the officer drove around looking for Brown, a man flagged down the officer and said his Chevy Cruze had been stolen.
