Commissioners consider ‘equitable’ raises for Shelby County employees

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Months ago, Shelby County commissioners signed off on a new budget and pay raises for county employees.

But instead of raising salaries by six percent across the board, commissioners are now deciding whether some full-time workers should get a bigger piece of the pie.

Under a new plan, the county’s lowest-paid workers would get the biggest pay increase and those at the top of the pay scale would see the smallest increase.

What’s being called the “equitable salary increase” was the center of a debate during Monday’s commission meeting.

    Major Midtown development planned

“People are working 12-hour shifts,” Commissioner Erika Sugarmon said. “I’ve heard people saying they’re getting food stamps. I’ve heard people saying not only that (but) they’re having to get other types of government assistance. We ought to be ashamed.”

“This is really something that needs to be considered during the budget deliberations, (in the) fiscal year 2026,” Commissioner Michael Whaley said. “It’s out of order to consider it now.”

The “equitable salary increase’ would cost taxpayers $6.5 million but for now, the plan has been put on hold indefinitely.

After the historic city tax increase and the property reappraisal scheduled for Jan 2025, which will mean more tax increases for city and county next year, I will be paying over $3500 a year and I am definitely moving next year out of city and Shelby county. They should be expecting this and they deserve it. Mayor Youngster is trying to collect money from everywhere and thinks we don’t notice it. Also he still has 100M in the rainy day fund he is not speaking of. He’s in it for himself. I’m gone that’s the best and only answer. And he should be calling for audits in all city government and he is not. Also crime is no better. One big joke. I’m gone

Who can sleep with themselves at night knowing their employees are having hard times to pay for rent, food, gas, utilizes, etc. To not give the 6% until January of 2025 is heartbreaking for families that need this now. Many of these head individuals in charge are not feeling the crunch that everyone else is feeling because they are making $100,000 or more with added perks. SC do better by those that give their all to you and love what they do.
