DESOTO COUNTY, Miss. — A DeSoto County parent who claims her daughter was bullied at Horn Lake Middle School says her daughter was taken to the Juvenile Justice Center in Hernando and remains there.

She says not enough is being done to address the problem of bullying.

“I am mad. I’m upset. I’m probably every feeling right now,” said Brittani Biggins, outraged after her daughter, who attends Horn Lake Middle School, was taken into custody for fighting.

“It was her 14th birthday. She went to school that morning. She was excited. She was happy,” Biggins said.

But her mom says a special day turned to disaster because she claims her daughter was bullied at school.

“A group message went around school that morning about girls planning to jump my daughter that day,” Biggins said. “They said the girls was saying stuff to my daughter all day in gym and just picking with her.”

She was heartbroken to learn her daughter was involved in a fight in PE class.

“I also received photos and a video of my daughter being  drug by her leg by one of the teachers at the school,” she said.

The girl was transported to the Juvenile Justice Center.

We reached out to Desoto County Schools about the incident. They responded:

“Regarding a specific student disciplinary matter, school officials cannot comment on the behavior of individual students and what would lead to the individual student receiving disciplinary consequences.”

Biggins says she has not been able to speak with her daughter since she was brought to the Juvenile Justice Center in Hernando.

She says she doesn’t even know what the charges are that have been filed against her daughter and she’s concerned about the girl’s mental and physical condition.

Biggins was told her daughter might remain in custody for another week.

“No one seems to care and my just-turned 14-year-old daughter is in the Juvenile Detention Center for possibly defending herself,” she said.

DeSoto County Schools said in a statement, “The safety of our students and staff is ourt top priority. All reports of bullying are treated with the utmost importance and these matters are addressed by school personnel in an appropriate and timely manner.
