MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The University of Memphis is raising funds for the creation of the Liza Wellford Fletcher Stadium, a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to the memory of Eliza Fletcher.

Fletcher was kidnapped and killed while out on a morning run in 2022. Cleotha Abston-Henderson, the man accused of the crimes, will face trial on February 10, 2025.

Fletcher previously played soccer for the University of Memphis. According to the university press release, the new facility will serve as the new home for the university’s women’s
and men’s soccer and track and field teams, creating a space that reflects Liza’s passion and dedication.

Now, fundraising efforts are underway for The Liza’s Light University of Memphis Soccer and Track Stadium Fund. The first phase of the project is working to raise $7 million to build the grandstand, press box, and locker rooms.

“It’s an honor to honor her and turn something so tragic into a positive not only for the family but this entire city,” said Brooks Monaghan, head women’s soccer coach at UM. “I’m hoping that we will be knocking those stands down soon after our season ends.”

Future phases will include “premier facilities designed to empower excellence on and off the field.”

“To be able to honor her and see what she meant to Memphis, it’s why we do what we do. So we want to honor her for that,” said Dr. Ed Scott, Athletic Director.
