MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A multi-car crash in the Hickory Hill area left three women dead, seven others injured, and a 16-year-old in custody on Tuesday night.

The 16-year-old suspect is charged with aggravated robbery, evading arrest with a vehicle pursuit, and prohibited weapons — a machine gun.

According to Memphis Police, around 9:30 p.m., officers attempted to pull over a juvenile driver in the area of Getwell Road and Cottonwood Road. But the driver refused to stop, continuing until he lost the initial officers.

Additional officers found the car in the area of Kirby Parkway and East Raines Road where the suspect disregarded a red light, causing a five-car crash involving five women, two men, and three juveniles including the suspect.

MPD says two females were pronounced dead on the scene and another female died on the way to the hospital.

The family of the victims identified them as Patrice Hughes, Dantrice Stanback [Patrice’s daughter], and Shekila Sivley [Dantrice’s cousin]. The 2-year-old involved in the crash was identified as Dantrice’s daughter, Malaysia Stanback, who is in the ICU.

People in the community are now blaming parents.

“What are the parents doing with their youth, with the kids? And it just keeps on. It’s like a cycle,” one man said.

Another man we talked to says the blame can go on both the parents and Memphis Police.

“Every time they chase somebody, somebody dies. Stop chasing people. Why you chasing? There’s more than one way to catch somebody,” he said.
