MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Desoto County Sheriff says a 14-year-old managed to escape from their juvenile detention center during a disturbance Friday night.

Sheriff Thomas Tuggle said around 6:45 p.m., his enforcement division was called in to assist deputy jailers after four juveniles attempted to attack them.

Tuggle said it took several minutes to bring the situation under control, and that’s when they discovered a fifth juvenile had escaped from a section of the facility under construction.

The sheriff said they issued a citywide lockdown, and the teen was captured in less than twenty minutes.

“As a parent, I would like to have some compassion for this kid’s desire to see his mother. Still, despite the young man’s unsuccessful attempt to escape, the incident underscored the importance of unwavering vigilance and the elimination of a revolving door for juveniles,” said Sheriff Tuggle.

Sheriff Tuggle said there was no immediate threat to the community.
