MEMPHIS, Tenn. — In the middle of traffic, in the middle of the day, a man was shot and killed Wednesday afternoon at an intersection in Whitehaven.

A good Samaritan says without hesitation he stepped in, attempting to help a stranger in need.

In addition to the rush hour traffic, at the always-busy intersection of Winchester and Millbranch Roads, there was a man being rushed away to the hospital following a violent attack.

“Watch and pray, try to help somebody. This is what we are here for,” said the man who tried to help the victim.

He says he still feels uneasy after putting his words into action and trying to help the man before first responders could arrive.

“We were fanning him with cardboard,” said the man. “We were trying to make him calm down.”

Law enforcement familiar with the case said it appears an unknown driver pulled up and opened fire. A witness said the victim managed to make his way to a corner store for help.

“He said he was out of breath and I tried to revive him,” said the man.

Despite the effort to save the man’s life, the victim did not survive. However, where the victim went for help is surrounded by businesses, which means there is the possibility surveillance cameras could aid detectives.

Police are looking for the driver who got away in a blue sedan.
