OXFORD, Miss. — In Oxford on Thursday, it was been heavy rain and high winds for hours and hours.

Francine was expected to leave some damage from high winds and heavy rain as it moved up Interstate 55. Officials say for now it looks like Oxford suffered no major damage.

A utility crew was dealing with downed lines just south of the square. It appears the lines were brought down by a tree.

“I think so far we’ve had one tree fall and it blocked a roadway. A lot of rain but no flooding issues as of yet,” said Shanre Fortner, director of Oxford EMA.

Fortner saying Oxford is prepared with chainsaws, heavy equipment and extra manpower through the night if necessary but he is keeping his fingers crossed.

“I believe the main threats have passed. Of course you know with any weather event…high winds and this much rain, anything could occur,” he said.

While officials here feel they dodged a bullet Thursday, the weather remains a big concern with a flood watch and wind advisory still in effect for this area.

According to Lafayette County Emergency Management, there were a “few hundred outages” in the county with winds reaching 39 mph around 1, but no injuries wewre reported.
