MEMPHIS, Tenn — A 19-year-old man is being charged after allegedly bringing a gun to a high school on Wednesday.

Reports say on Sept. 25 at 2:20 p.m. officers responded to a fight call at Hamilton High School in South Memphis.

When officers arrived, the school resource officer advised a suspect was seen carrying a handgun in his waistband while inside the school.

Reports say the suspect was outside at the time when officers arrived, and Memphis police were directed to the suspect’s location.

Police say Javarious Sistrunk was located in the parking lot and patted down. Officers located a Smith and Wesson, SD9, 9mm in front of his waistband.

According to reports, the weapon’s serial number was checked and showed to be stolen from a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado two years ago on Sept. 15. The firearm has an estimated value of $600.

MPD says Sistrunk was taken into custody and transported to the Memphis Police Department on 170 N. Main for further investigation. Officers advised him of his Miranda Rights, which he chose to invoke, and declined to provide a statement.

Sistrunk is being charged with Carrying Weapons on School Property to wit: Firearm and Theft of Property $1,000-$2,500 to wit: Stolen Firearm and TCA.

He appeared in court Thursday morning and faced Judge Lucchesi for three minutes for his first appearance.

“You are charged with possession of burglary, you are already in court on that. That benchmark is $1500,” said Judge Lucchesi. “You have a new case here, where are charged with theft of less than 3,500 and carrying a weapon on school property.”

Sistrunk’s bond has been set at $31,500.

“I’m going to appoint you a public defender,” said Judge Lucchesi.

In the first two months of the school year, at least four guns have been found in Memphis Shelby County Schools.

“Schools, even under these incidents is still the safest place for our students,” said Superintendent Dr. Marie Feagins.

WREG reached out to MSCS to see how guns are getting into the schools and their plans to crack down on the issue. We are still waiting for a response.

Javarious Sistrunk is in on a bench warrant so he will not have a bail hearing.
