MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man is now in custody after a shooting that left a woman dead turned into a police chase in a stolen vehicle in South Memphis on Sunday night.

Maury Kennedy, 18, is charged with theft of property $10,000-$60,000, possession of a controlled substance with intent to manufacture/deliver/sell marijuana, and intentionally evading arrest in an automobile.

A little after 10:50 p.m., officers say they were on the scene of a disturbance call when they heard multiple shots being fired across the street at Fast Fuel gas station on 1387 Elvis Presley Boulevard.

That is when officers say they saw a black sedan leave the scene and a woman lying in the parking lot suffering from a gunshot wound.

At that time, police called Memphis Fire Department to make the scene for the woman. Officers then attempted to stop the black sedan, but the driver refused and a police chase was initiated.

Police chased the vehicle in the area of Millbranch Road and Winchester Road where the driver struck an MPD-marked unit before disabling his vehicle.

“I saw this car going down the street, but I was hearing the police cars and they were chasing this car extremely slow,” said Kevin Armstrong, a witness. “They got in front of Lit Junior and they did a pit maneuver.”

The driver, later identified as Maury Kennedy, was taken into custody.

The woman was taken to the hospital in critical condition where she later died.

The suspect was driving in a Honda Accord that was reported stolen on September 21. Investigators say 100 grams of marijuana was found inside the vehicle.
